Jane Austen Book Group

The group reads Jane Austen very SLOWLY, and takes time to explore the historical and cultural context at the time of the book being written. Sometimes we simply enjoy an in depth discussion of the characters as they reveal themselves. A few chapters are tackled each month, and occasionally just one chapter.
During this past year we have been reading Emma a few chapters at a time, and during Lockdown we were meeting more frequently than usual on Zoom every two weeks. We took the theme of agricultural changes including the Enclosure Acts, and changes in Society around 1815. To date the group has read the following over previous years: Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and has now come to the end of Emma. Over 3 months during the summer term we read Jane Austen ‘The Secret Radical’ and will resume our Novel reading in September with Sense and Sensibility.

I have made the decision that we will continue to meet via Zoom throughout the Autumn/Winter Term.
